The Old Airport Won’t Be Closing
by admin on Mar.06, 2010, under Airpark News
At least not as soon as previously thought. The new airport is still on tract for opening in May for commercial operations, though by flying over it to view the progress it looks like there’s nearly a years worth of work to do. Lots of drainage issues to clear up, lots of paving to be done yet, and none of the current FBOs have signed any leases for the new airport yet (so I’ve been told).
Apparently both the FAA transition team and the new owners of the old airport property have mentioned that the old airport will remain open at least until the end of July 2010 to aid in the transition. Last time I flew over I noticed there appeared to be no construction progress for any FBO facilities; trying to get an FBO facility built and established in less than two months would be…well, pretty challenging at best if not impossible. And the new owners have apparently discussed in their board meetings something about leaving it open for awhile longer than the July date as an uncontrolled field, at least until the economy starts to turn around which would make it economically feasible for them to start development.
So who knows what will eventually happen over there. Everyone is taking a wait and see attitude and we all really feel bad for the people at the FBOs who’s job status are all in limbo.

Speaking of airport construction/development, can we create a separate post for plans/ideas for our airstrip? I don’t live down there (yet!) and can’t make the board meetings (in NC) but would like to be in the loop. Maybe minutes from the Board Meetings could be posted (if not already). Thoughts?

That’s probably a good idea Jason. It would be easy to add a new section to the blog for that purpose, but there aren’t many people who are following this blog yet, or who even know it exists! The board members know but to my knowledge, they’ve never stopped by here yet.
The board meeting minutes should be posted on the main web page but I’m woefully behind in getting anything updated in that respect right now. I don’t even have time to update my own web pages! I have envisioned adding another page to the web site to show lots for sale and contact information for them but there just isn’t enough time right now.
Feel free to email the board members (email addresses on the main web page) and ask them any information you wish, including if they’d help make this blog a little more active and useful tool for communication.
If you have a topic you want to explore, let me know and I can start a thread in the new section concerning airpark development! Just out of curiosity, which lot do you own here?

We own lot 44. Really, really had wanted to build by now, but…well, you know the market.
I’ll take your advise and email the board members over the next week or two. Good to get that information out there as much as possible (I think).
